D&amp;I offers numerous benefits, but many leaders are unsure of how to implement it within their teams without waiting for their company to take action.\u00a0 As an experienced inclusive leader, I successfully implemented D&amp;I and have been asked by my leaders and colleagues to share some of my insights on how I was able to build my high-performing and award winning teams.\u00a0 During this 3-part blog series, I will share some of my strategies, guiding principles and the results I was able to achieve as an inclusive leader.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fb62f83 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"fb62f83\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Look for potential<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-856976a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"856976a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For me, part of building a \u201cpowerhouse team\u201d included how I selected candidates; it was always based on their potential, not just their experience or appearance.\u00a0 I always began by ensuring <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.shrm.org\/blog\/can-your-job-posting-attract-diverse-candidates\">the job postings<\/a> that I used, encouraged a diverse pool of applicants.\u00a0 During each interview I looked for both a personality fit for the company\u2019s current culture as well as a fit for the culture I wanted to create on my team.\u00a0 After all, we spend more time with the people we work with than we do our own families!<\/p><p>When I interviewed, I wanted applicants to relax and be themselves so I could see who they truly were.\u00a0 I always wanted to see who we would be working with; not the \u201cpersona\u201d that showed up to the hour interview.\u00a0<\/p><p>The amount of focus that I placed on their resume depended on the technicality of the position.\u00a0 I knew what the answers should sound like when people knew the job but answers that were too rehearsed also made me dig deeper.\u00a0 I wanted personalities who were also team players.\u00a0 My focus was to build a team, not have a roster of individual top performers who would waste time attempting to outperform each other rather than concentrating on the task of driving our business.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ea6f8e6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ea6f8e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>I wanted team players who had potential to grow and would share their learnings.\u00a0 People that were:<\/p><ul><li>Coachable and wanted critical feedback for their growth and development<\/li><li>Responsible and detail-oriented<\/li><li>Personable, approachable, open, and had good communication skills (verbal and non-verbal)<\/li><li>Able to understand the value of and demonstrated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/justin-bariso\/13-things-emotionally-intelligent-people-do.html\">EQ<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9c66c5d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9c66c5d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">When conducting interviews, I was very clear on what I was looking for.\u00a0 To be successful in a cross-functional organization, we have to work well with people.\u00a0 We were not just data crunchers (although we did build budgets, forecasts and provide data analytics) but were also business partners who had to speak to and interact with people.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t focus on people\u2019s age, nor did I care about gender, ethnicity, family status, sexual orientation, geographical neighbourhoods, educational programs or religion.\u00a0 This resulted in applicants and ultimately teams that were very diverse, (especially when compared to my colleagues). \u00a0Take a moment to reflect and acknowledge your own personal biases; we all have them but as leaders we should be constantly trying to identify, challenge and correct them.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-f3612ad elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"f3612ad\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-2c9827a\" data-id=\"2c9827a\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4371fac elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4371fac\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Consider questions carefully<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bdf6e13 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bdf6e13\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>During the interview I asked a wide variety of questions.\u00a0 To ease interviewees, I started with standard questions that they should have prepared, then moved onto more thought-provoking and personal questions to search for specific personality traits that I was looking for.\u00a0 For me, an interview is just a conversation, not a grilling session to make someone sweat.\u00a0 I was also very honest about the challenges the candidate would face in the role and the personality traits that would make them successful for the role they were applying for; no surprises or games, straightforward honest conversations.\u00a0<\/p><p>I have heard from a few of my hires that they thought they \u201cbombed\u201d their interview with me, but it wasn\u2019t because I was intense, it was because my approach of just having a conversation was so different.\u00a0 But this \u201cconversation\u201d approach allows the interviewer to see more of the applicant\u2019s true personality and behaviours.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a271b04 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a271b04\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-2ee3039\" data-id=\"2ee3039\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6e02a39 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6e02a39\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Build a team with diverse experience<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eaf421d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"eaf421d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>My team was a mix of junior people with potential alongside\u00a0more experienced colleagues\u00a0with varying experiences who were ready for more (either a promotion or an opportunity to focus on project work).\u00a0 Some people had a lot of leadership experience, others had none.\u00a0 Some had a lot of industry experience, others had very little or none at all.\u00a0 Some people were new to the company, others had spent several years at the company and sometimes came from other departments.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because if everyone was ready and expected a promotion, my team would be in constant turnover and turmoil with people leaving for other opportunities that the company nor I could provide.\u00a0 Those with minimal job experience had great opportunities to grow and stretch themselves, while others with years of experience had a chance to train and coach others at different levels and prepare for their promotion, and so on.\u00a0 We all learned from each other.\u00a0 My expectation was that everyone learns, grows, shares and repeats.\u00a0 I believe that everyone has talent so if you are not contributing to the team and company, then your time is being wasted.<\/p><p>Let me know your thoughts and questions.\u00a0 How did you build your teams?\u00a0 Now that you have your team built, how do you maintain, motivate, develop and ensure they thrive?\u00a0 Let\u2019s talk some more in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;
