It\u2019s how we feel coming to work.\u201d<\/p><p>While many organizations approach change and transformation through checklists and one-off initiatives, Colleen emphasized the need to evolve toward something deeper\u2014creating cultures of belonging and psychological safety. \u201cWe all want to belong. That\u2019s the connection point. It\u2019s the foundation of culture.\u201d<\/p><p>She explained that psychological safety isn\u2019t about comfort, but about trust\u2014the ability for employees to bring forward ideas, admit mistakes, and ask for help without fear of consequences. \u201cIt takes courage and vulnerability to really lean into that space. But that\u2019s what builds trust,\u201d she said.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Leading with Emotional Intelligence<\/strong><\/p><p>A recurring theme in the conversation was the importance of emotionally intelligent leadership. As Colleen shared, \u201cEmployees expect leaders to be emotionally and socially intelligent. They want to see leaders who are self-aware, who know the impact of their tone, their behavior, their energy.\u201d<\/p><p>True people-centric leadership, she explained, starts with modeling the right behaviors\u2014collaboration, humility, openness\u2014and making values visible through action. \u201cWe still see companies proud that employees can recite the values. It\u2019s about building connection,\u201d she said. From rotating meeting facilitators to digital shout-outs and wrap-up Fridays, small rituals matter.<\/p><p>\u201cIt\u2019s about creating those micro-moments of connection that replace the water cooler,\u201d Colleen noted. \u201cBecause meaningful work and a sense of belonging are huge motivators for people, even in virtual spaces.\u201d<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Empowering Employees to Co-Create Culture<\/strong><\/p><p>Too often, culture is something organizations do for employees, rather than with them. \u201cCulture is built with employees, not for them,\u201d Colleen stated. She encouraged leaders to involve employees in shaping the culture every day through small but powerful actions.<\/p><p>\u201cSay good morning. Use people\u2019s names. Follow up on the personal details they\u2019ve shared. Leave a sticky note that says thank you,\u201d she suggested. \u201cIt\u2019s noticing. It\u2019s being present. That\u2019s what builds trust.\u201d<\/p><p>She shared a favorite question she often brings into team meetings: \u201cWhere\u2019s the friction?\u201d It\u2019s a lighthearted but effective way to uncover where disconnects, bottlenecks, or tension may be hiding\u2014before they escalate.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Operationalizing Well-Being and Culture<\/strong><\/p><p>As burnout rates climb, especially in the wake of ongoing disruption, Colleen made a compelling case for embedding well-being into cultural foundations. \u201cIt\u2019s about more than yoga classes,\u201d she noted. \u201cIt\u2019s about how people feel walking into work. It\u2019s the ability to say, \u2018I need help,\u2019 and be met with care, not consequences.\u201d<\/p><p>This extends to financial well-being, mental health, and work-life balance. And importantly, it starts with leadership. \u201cCheck in with people. Ask how they\u2019re doing, where they feel stretched. And pay attention to what they\u2019re telling you.\u201d<\/p><p>Colleen also emphasized the importance of tracking workforce sentiment, \u201cSentiment analysis helps leaders understand what\u2019s really going on beneath the surface, and where culture needs attention before issues escalate.\u201d<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Culture in Mergers &amp; Acquisitions: A Make-or-Break Factor<\/strong><\/p><p>One of the most powerful parts of the session focused on M&amp;A integration\u2014an area where Colleen has deep expertise. \u201cCulture should be part of due diligence. It\u2019s just as important as the financials,\u201d she said.<\/p><p>She cautioned against assumptions that companies in the same industry or geography automatically share similar cultures. \u201cThey can be wildly different,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd if you don\u2019t pay attention to culture during integration, it can quickly unravel into politics, silos, and confusion.\u201d<\/p><p>Instead, Colleen recommends mutual respect, listening, and protecting what matters most to employees. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen companies who prioritize culture in a merger come out stronger.
